ISLAMIC ETHICS:
Righteousness #

Righteousness is a wide ranging concept that encompasses both the belief system and the value system in the Islamic Ideology. It deals with the
personal as well as the interactive societal aspect.
The sweeping domain of righteousness extends far beyond what has
already been mentioned in the previous two articles that included conduct towards the parents, the spouse, the relatives and the orphans. It also covers the week and the needy
members of the society, but also the wayfarers and others.
In other words, the Muslim has to render kindness, help,
compassion and respect to everyone around.
Holy Quran:
Code of Ethics #16:
Be kind and helpful to the weak and needy.
Quran 2:83
|
And remember We
took a covenant from the Children of Israel to Worship none but Allah;
and treat with kindness your parents and kindred, and orphans and
those in need; speak fair to the people; be steadfast in prayer; and practice regular charity.
Then did ye turn back, except a few among you, and you backslide even
now. |
Quran 2:177
It is
not righteousness that you turn your faces towards east or west,
but it is righteousness- to believe in Allah and the Last
Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who
ask, and for the ransom of slaves… |
Quran 2:215
They ask you
as to what they should spend.
Say: Whatever wealth you spend, it is for the parents and the near of
kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer,
and whatever good you do, Allah surely knows it. |
Quran 4:8
But if at
the time of division other relatives, or orphans or poor, are present, feed them out of the property,
and speak to them words of kindness and justice. |
Quran 4:36
Serve
Allah, and join not any partners with Him;
and do good- to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need,
neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess:
For Allah loves not the arrogant, the vainglorious;- |
Quran 9:60
Alms are only for
the poor and the needy, and the officials (appointed) over them, and those whose hearts are made to incline (to truth) and the (ransoming of) captives and those in debts and in
the way of Allah and the wayfarer;
an ordinance from Allah; and Allah is knowing, Wise. |
Quran 17:26
And render to the kindred their due rights, as (also) to
those in want, and to the wayfarer: But squander not your wealth in the manner of a spendthrift. |
Quran 24:22
|
Let not
those among you who are endued with grace and amplitude of means resolve by oath against helping their kinsmen, those in want, and those who have left their homes in Allah's
cause:
let them forgive and overlook,
do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? For Allah is
Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. |
Quran 30:38
So give what is due to kindred, the needy, and the
wayfarer. That is best for those who seek the Countenance, of Allah, and it is they who will prosper |
Quran 59:7
|
Whatever
Allah has restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns, it is for Allah and for the Messenger, and for the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer,
so that it may not be a thing taken by turns among the rich ( a state
of the rich) among you,
and whatever the Messenger gives you, accept it, and from whatever he
forbids you, keep back,
and be heedful of Allah; surely Allah is severe in retributing evil |
Quran 76:8
And they give food out of love for Him to the poor and the
orphan and the captive |
Quran 93:10
And as for him who asks, do not chide (him), |
Holy Quran:
Code of Ethics #17:
Be good, kind and considerate to your neighbors
Quran 4:36
And serve Allah
and do not associate any thing with Him
and be good to the parents and to the near of kin and the orphans and
the needy and the neighbor of (your) kin and the alien neighbor, and the companion in a journey and the wayfarer and those whom your right hands possess;
surely Allah does not love him who is proud, boastful; |
Holy Quran:
Code of Ethics #18:
Be good and helpful to the wayfarers.
Quran 2:177
It is not
righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East and the West, but righteousness is this that one should believe in Allah and the last day and the angels and the Book and
the prophets,
and give away wealth out of love for Him to the near of kin and the
orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and for (the emancipation of) the captives, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; and the performers of their promise
when they make a promise, and the patient in distress and affliction and in time of conflicts--
these are they who are true (to themselves) and these are they who
guard (against evil).
|
Quran 2;215

the wayfarer, and do not squander wastefully. |
Quran 30:38
Then give to the near of kin his due, and to the needy and
the wayfarer; this is best for those who desire Allah's pleasure, and these it is who are successful |
Quran 59:7

Holy Quran:
Code of Ethics #19:
Be good, kind, helpful, and considerate to others.
Quran 2:82
And (as for) those who believe and do good deeds, these
are the dwellers of the garden; in it they shall abide. |
Quran 16:90
Surely Allah
enjoins the doing of justice and the doing of good to others and the giving to the kindred,
and He forbids indecency and evil and rebellion;
He admonishes you that you may be mindful. |
Quran 16:128
Surely Allah is with those who guard against
evil and those who do good to others |
Quran 28:77
And seek
by means of what Allah has given you the future abode, and do not neglect your portion of this world,
and do good (to others) as Allah has done good to you,
and do not seek to make mischief in the land, surely Allah
does not love the mischief-makers. |
This verse brings out in an uncertain terms the Islamic
duality doctrine that a Muslim does good deeds for the love of God seeking His grace for the hereafter and at the same time seeks what God has granted the Muslim’s rightful share
in this world.
Quran 95:6
Except those who believe and do good, so they shall have a
reward never to be cut off. |
Quran 103:3
Except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each
other truth, and enjoin on each other patience. |
The above mentioned ethical codes are consistent with the main theme of being righteous, kind and respectful in one’s actions and behavior towards others beginning with one’s
parents, spouses, relatives and ending with people at large. This is how a Muslim is admonished to behave and is encouraged to attain a high standard of behavior, emulating our
guide and role model. See section “Character’, in this series.
