It is imperative when dealing with Islamic ethics and value system
to point out the importance of this topic and the place it occupies in the reality domain of Islamic teachings. The application of this value system is beneficial and is the right
course of action as far as the individual or the society as a whole Just as we had discussed in the first section the character topic of a Muslim and its importance in providing
the backbone to the ethics and value system of the Islamic social structure, we are now going to discuss, yet another of the fundamental characteristics of a Muslim which is
righteousness.
Righteousness is a wide ranging concept that encompasses both the belief system and the value system in the Islamic Ideology. It deals with the
personal as well as the interactive societal aspect. Quran2:177
It is
not righteousness that you turn your faces Towards East or West;
but it is righteousness- to believe in Allah and the
Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for
those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves;
to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular
charity; to fulfil the contracts which you have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic.
Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing. |
The first part of this verse deals with the belief aspect which is belief in God, the last day, the angles, the Book and the messenger.
The second half of the verse deals with the applied aspect of
righteousness which is the spending out of one’s substance to help the needy and poor, to hold to one’s contracts and covenants and to be steadfast and patient in adversity.
In this verse both the essentials of the faith system and the value systems are mentioned, The belief system mainly comprises the belief in God, the Last Day , the Angles, the Book
and the messengers. The remainder of the verse emphasizes the relevant value system pertaining to righteousness that we will be addressing now.
Righteousness as an interactive pragmatic social trait that comprises the applied side of human behavior is not a human made concept that comes out
evolving as a result of human experiences. Rather it is a set of behavioral patterns that spring out of Islamic value system that are God given that clearly defines for us in the
domain of righteousness what is right and what is wrong.
Righteousness springs out of what is right. What is right is but
appropriately defined and accorded by God to His creation. We humans, as part of His creation, have been entrusted from within His universal revelation with a given the divine set
of values and rules to follow in order to fulfill His directives to His Human creation to lead a “ righteous” life.
Central to a righteous value system is kindness, consideration and
lending a helping hand to treat with respect our fellow human beings in various aspects of our lives as detailed in the following and related ethical codes.
Holy Quran:
Code of Ethics #12:
Be kind, respectful and obedient to your parents.
Taking care of parents occupies a special place in the ethical duties that a Muslim has to observe. It is noteworthy that taking care of the parents occupy an elevated position in
importance that falls after the admonition of the oneness and worship of the Creator.
Quran 2:83
And remember We
took a covenant from the Children of Israel (to this effect):
Worship none but Allah; treat with kindness your parents and kindred,
and orphans and those in need; speak fair to the people;
be steadfast in prayer; and practice regular charity. Then did ye
turn back, except a few among you, and you backslide even now. |
Quran 2:215,
They ask you as to what they
should spend.
Say: Whatever wealth you spend, it is for the parents and the near of kin and
the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer,
and whatever good you do, Allah surely knows it. |
Quran 4:36
Serve Allah, and
join not any partners with Him;
and do good- to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbors
who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess:
For Allah loves not the arrogant, the vainglorious;- |
Quran 6:151
Say: "Come, I will
rehearse what Allah has (really) prohibited you from":
Do not ascribe divinity anyone beside Him; be good to your parents;
kill not your children on a plea of want;- We provide sustenance for you and for them;- come not nigh to shameful deeds. Whether open or secret; take not life, which Allah hath
made sacred, except by way of justice and law:
thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom. |
Quran 7:23
Thy Lord
has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents.
Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life,
say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor. |
Quran 7:24
And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility,
and say: "My Lord! bestow on them your Mercy as they cherished me in childhood." |
Quran 31:14
And We have
enjoined on man to be good to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning:
"Show gratitude to Me and to your parents: to Me is your final Goal. |
Quran 31:15
"But if they
strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not; yet bear them company in this life with consideration, and follow the way of
those who turn to me (in love):
in the end the return of you all is to Me, and I will tell you the
truth (and meaning) of all that ye did." |
Quran 46:15
We have enjoined on man
kindness to his parents:
In pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth. The
carrying of the (child) to his weaning is (a period of) thirty months.
At length, when he reaches the age of full strength and attains forty years, he
says, "O my Lord! Grant me that I may be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me, and upon both my parents, and that I may do what is right that You may approve;
and grant me righteousness in my off springs.
Truly have I turned to You and truly do I bow to You as one of the
Muslims." |
