Surah Al-Naas

(MANKIND)

Surah #114 Consisting of 6 Ayahs

Listen to Surah Al-Naas

In Allah's Name, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,
the King of mankind, مَلِكِ النَّاسِ
the God of mankind, إِلَهِ النَّاسِ
from the evil of the sneaking whisperer
which whispers in the hearts of mankind,
whether among Jinns or mankind.

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,  go to top of page

Allah Almighty directs Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and all of us to declare that we ask for protection and help from Him.  No one else can ever help us as much as Allah Almighty can.  Allah (swt) knows us very well and He knows how much help we need from Him.  Allah wants us to be good Muslims with pure hearts.  He will respond to us when we seek His protection and help.

Here we ask Him to give us shelter and protection from something because we know that only He is the sole source of protection for all people at all times.

the King of mankind,  go to top of page

Allah (swt) also describes Himself as the Supreme King of people.  He is the true and real King, the true and real Ruler, not only of us, but of all men and creation throughout history.  Allah is the merciful and compassionate King, He is the just and supreme King.  As we ask His help, we also remind ourselves that He is the Lord of mankind, the Creator of mankind and the Master of all.

Each person has a direct link to Allah at all times and it is Allah who rules every part of our daily lives.

the God of mankind,  go to top of page

Allah (swt) also describes Himself as the God of Mankind.  He is the only Deity we worship and He is the only Real Lord of Mankind.  There are people who pay more attention to money, their jobs, or other aspects of life than to their Lord.  People may even worship these things or others rather than Allah (God).

We worship nothing but Allah and our real salvation is in following His religion and pleasing Him.  That is why in our Shahaada we say: There is no deity except Almighty Allah.

Allah created us, Allah rules us, to Allah we shall return.  It is only to Allah that each person should feel responsible.

from the evil of the sneaking whisperer  go to top of page

Allah Almighty has asked us to take refuge in Him and to ask for His help and protection from disruptive thoughts that often come to us.  These thoughts can be evil and very bad, and if we are their captives we will hurt ourselves and people around us.  On occasion, all of us have bad desires and evil thoughts, but we ask Allah's protection against temptations and evil thoughts.

which whispers in the hearts of mankind,  go to top of page

This is a continuation of the previous Ayah.  It means that those evil thoughts may keep coming to us repeatedly, kind of bubbling inside our chests and in our deepest emotions.  We might even mistake them as logical or right.  We beg and beseech Allah (swt) to prevent these thoughts from being imbedded in our hearts and minds

whether among the Jinn or mankind.  go to top of page

These evil thoughts may appear in the hearts of all people as well as the hearts of the Jinns.  This is to say that both people and Jinns are susceptible to these wrong thoughts.

THROUGH SURAH AL-NAAS ALLAH WANTS USgo to top of page

 1.     To ask His help and protection and to take refuge in Him since He is:

         h  the Lord of mankind,

h  the only King of mankind, and

         h  the only God of mankind;

2.     To take refuge in Him from the evil thoughts that come to us off and on, because:

Allah's help will protect us from such evil thoughts,

such evil thoughts can hurt us or others a great deal, and

such evil thoughts can be in people and in the Jinns;

3.      To read this Surah whenever bad ideas or thoughts come to us.  Surah Al-Naas will help us remain clean hearted and to avoid doing bad things that can hurt us and other people.  Islam encourages us to be pure-hearted, to have good intentions, to avoid making trouble, and to strive to improve.
