ISLAMIC ETHICS:
Peace and Civility

In shaping up the character of a believer, God has through the Divine Code of Ethics given us a clear choice
to live up to His expectation for a just, equitable and peaceful society.
What follows are the tenants and admonitions with which God intends to shape the character of the believer
to be always in harmony and peace with the self and the environment.
Since Islam, by name, is a religion of peace and, therefore, instructs its followers to shun
violence and seek peaceful means to resolve issues, as we will discern from the upcoming divine codes of ethics. They instruct the believers to conduct their affairs through
consultation with civility and mutual respect. The codes make it abundantly clear that killing of innocent human beings is strictly forbidden. Fighting
to kill or harm others is only permitted in self defense and when the individual or the community is willfully wronged. The believers
are encouraged to save lives, refrain from malicious acts and shun oppression.
Holy Quran:
Code of Ethics #37:
Conduct Public Affairs by mutual consultation
Quran: 3:159
Thus it
is due to mercy from Allah that you deal with them gently, and had you been rough, hard hearted, they would certainly have dispersed from around you; pardon them therefore and
ask pardon for them, and take counsel with them in the affair; so when you have decided, then place your trust in God; surely God loves those who put their trust in Him. |
Quran 42:38
And
those who respond to their Lord and keep up with their prayers, and whose rule (in all matters of common concern) is to consultation among themselves, and who spend on others
out of what We have given them. |
Holy Quran:
Code of Ethics #38:
Forgive and Reconcile.
Quran 3:134
Those
who spend (benevolently) in ease as well as in hard times, and those who restrain (their) anger and pardon people; God loves the doers of good deeds. |
Quran 7:199
Take to
forgiveness and enjoin goodness and turn aside from the ignorant. |
Quran 15:85
And We
did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them two but in truth; and the hour is most surely coming, so turn away with kindly forgiveness. |
Quran 24:22
And let
not those of you who have been graced with abundance ever become remiss in helping the near of kin and the poor and those who have forsaken the domain of evil for the grace of
God, and let them pardon and forbear. Do you not desire that God should forgive you? And God is Forgiving, and dispenser of Grace. |
Quran 41:34
But good
and the evil cannot be equal. Repel (evil) with something that is better, when lo! he between whom and you was enmity would be as if he had been a true friend. |
Quran 42:37
And
those who, Shun the great sins and indecencies, and whenever they become angry they forgive |
Quran 42:40
And the
recompense of evil is punishment likewise, but whoever forgives and amends, he shall have his reward from God; surely He does not love the unjust. |
Quran 42:43
But
whosoever is patient in adversity and forgiving, then most surely these are actions to set one’s heart onto. |
Quran 64:14
O you
who believe! Surely from among your wives and your children there is an enemy to you; therefore beware of them; and if you pardon and forbear and forgive, then surely Allah is
Forgiving, Merciful |
Holy Quran:
Code of Ethics #39:
Foster Brotherhood and Unity with other Muslims.
Quran 3:103
And hold
fast by the covenant of God all together and be not divided, and remember the favors of God on you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts so by His favor you became
brethren; and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it, thus God makes clear His messages to you so that you may find guidance.
|
Quran 21:92
Verily,
this community of yours is one single community, and I am the sustainer of you all, therefore, worship Me alone. |
Quran 23:52
Verily,
this community of yours is one single community, and I am the sustainer of you all, therefore, be conscious of Me. |

Quran 7:189
He it is
Who created you from a single being, and of the same (kind) did He make his mate, that he might incline to her; so when he covers her she bears a light burden, then moves about
with it; but when it grows heavy, they both call upon Allah, their Lord: If Thou givest us a good one, we shall certainly be of the grateful ones. |
Quran 49:11
O you
who believe! let not (one) people deride (another) people perchance they may be better than they, nor let women (deride other) women, perchance they may be better than they; and
not shall you defame one another nor shall you insult one another inappropriate epithets, evil is all imputation of inequity and after one has attained to faith and who become
guilty thereof and do not repent, it is they who are evil doers. |
Quran 49:13
O you
men! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come know each other; surely the most honorable of you
in the sight of God is the one among you who ismost deeply conscious of Him. Behold Gold is all-Knowing, and All- Aware. |
Holy Quran:
Code of Ethics #41:
Keep good relations with people of the Book.
Quran 2:62
Surely
those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in God and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their
Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve. |
Quran 2:285
The
messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers; they all believe in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers; We make
no difference between any of His messengers; and they say: We hear and obey, our Lord! Thy forgiveness (do we crave), and to Thee is the eventual course. |
Quran 3:64
Say: O
followers of the Book! Let us Come to the tenet which you and us hold in common, that we shall not worship none but God, and that we shall not ascribe divinity to none beside
Him, and (that) some of us shall not take others for lords besides God; but if they turn back, then say: Bear witness that we shall surrender to Him. |
Quran 3:113-114
They are
not all alike; of the followers of the Book there is an upright party; they recite Allah's communications in the nighttime and they adore (Him).
They believe in Allah and the last day, and they enjoin
what is right and forbid the wrong and they strive with one another in hastening to good deeds, and those are among the good. |
Quran 3:199
And most
surely of the followers of the Book there are those who believe in Allah and (in) that which has been revealed to you and (in) that which has been revealed to them, being lowly
before Allah; they do not take a small price for the communications of Allah; these it is that have their reward with their Lord; surely God is quick in reckoning. |
Quran 29:46
And do
not dispute with the followers of the Book except by what is best, except those of them who act unjustly, and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed
to you, and our Allah and your Allah is One, and to Him do we submit. |

2:256
There
shall be no coercion in matters of faith; truly the right way has become clearly distinct from the wrong; therefore, whoever rejects the powers of evil and believes in God has
indeed taken hold of a most unfailing support, which shall never give way, for God is All Hearing, and All Knowing. |
Quran 4:164
And (We
sent) messengers We have mentioned to you before and messengers whom We have not mentioned to you; and to Moses, God has spoken His Word: |
Quran 6:108
And do
not revile those whom they invoke others besides God, lest they revile God out of spite, and in ignorance. Thus have We made their own doings appear fair; then to their Lord
they shall return, and then He will inform them of what they were doing(wrong.) |
Quran 10:99
And if
your Lord had pleased, surely all those who are in the earth would have believed, all of them; will you then force men till they become believers?
|
Quran 11:118
And if
your Lord had pleased He would certainly have made people a single nation, and they shall continue to differ |
Quran 16:125
Call to
the way of your Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and have disputations with them in the best manner; surely your Lord best knows those who go astray from His path, and
He knows best those who follow the right way. |
Quran 22:67
To every nation We
appointed acts of devotion which they observe, therefore they should not dispute with you about the matter and call to your Lord; most surely you are on a right way
|
Quran 40:78
And
certainly We sent messengers before you: there are some of them that We have mentioned to you and there are others whom We have not mentioned to you, and it was not meet for a
messenger that he should bring a sign except with Allah's permission, but when the command of Allah came, judgment was given with truth, and those who treated (it) as a lie were
lost.

Quran 60:8
Allah
does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness

Quran 4:92
And it
does not behoove a believer to kill a believer except by mistake, and whoever kills a believer by mistake, he should free a believing slave, and blood-money should be paid to
his people unless they remit it as alms; but if he be from a tribe hostile to you and he is a believer, the freeing of a believing slave (suffices), and if he is from a tribe
between whom and you there is a convenant, the blood-money should be paid to his people along with the freeing of a believing slave; but he who cannot find (a slave) should fast
for two months successively: a penance from Allah, and Allah is Knowing, Wise. |
Quran 4:93
And
whoever kills a believer intentionally, his punishment is hell; he shall abide in it, and Allah will send His wrath on him and curse him and prepare for him a painful
chastisement
|
Quran 5:32

For this
reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and

extravagantly in the land. |

Say:
Come I will recite what your Lord has forbidden to you-- (remember) that you do not associate anything with Him, and show kindness to your parents, and do not kill your children
for (fear of) want-- We provide for you and for them-- and do not draw near indecencies, those of which are apparent and those which are concealed, and do not take any human
being’s life which God has willed to be sacred, except in the pursuit of justice; this He has enjoined you with that you may understand. |
Quran 17:33
And do
not take any human being’s life which God has willed to be sacred, except in the pursuit of justice, and whoever is killed unjustly, We have empowered the defender of his rights
to exact a just retribution, so let him not exceed the bounds of equity in retributive killing; for behold he is being succored. |
Quran 25:68
|
And who
never invoke any deity side by side with God and do not take any human being’s life- the life which God has willed to be sacred- except in the pursuit of justice, and (who) do
not commit adultery and he who does this shall find a requital of sin; |

Code of Ethics #45:
Save Lives
Quran 5:32.

For this
reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and
whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly Our messengers came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act
extravagantly in the land. |

Code of Ethics #46:
Do not harm or kill yourself (commit suicide)
Quran 2:195
And
spend in the way of Allah and cast not yourselves to perdition with your own hands, and do good (to others); surely Allah loves the doers of good. |
Quran 4:29
O you
who believe! do not devour your property among yourselves falsely, except that it be trading by your mutual consent; and do not kill your people; surely Allah is Merciful to
you. |

Code of Ethics #47:
Avoid aggression and incline towards Peace.
Quran 2:190
Fight in
the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loves not the aggressors. |
Quran 5:87
O ye who
believe! Forbid not the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, and transgress not, Lo! Allah loves not the transgressors |
Quran 8:61
And if
they incline to peace, then incline to it and trust in Allah; surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing. |
Quran 60: 7-8
It may
be that Allah will ordain love between you and those of them with whom ye are at enmity. Allah is Mighty, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them
kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice.
|
Noteworthy among these commands are the ones that order the believers to keep good
relations with people of other faiths (3:113-115)
They are
not all alike. Of the People of the Scripture there is a staunch community who recite the revelations of Allah in the night season, falling prostrate (before Him).
They believe in Allah and the Last Day, and enjoin right conduct
and forbid indecency, and vie one with another in good works. These are of the righteous.
Of the good that they do, nothing will be rejected of them; for
Allah knoweth well those that do right. |
and that there is no compulsion in religion (2:256).
Let
there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the very trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks.
And Allah Hears and Knows all things. |
And avoid aggression and incline towards peace. In verse 2:208 God specifically commands the believers to enter peace in total
:
“Oh you
who believe enter peace in totality and do not follow Satan’s footsteps, for verily he is your enemy.” |
Furthermore, the believers are urged to incline towards peace if the opposition shows signs towards
peace (Quran 8:61)
And if
they incline to peace, then incline to it and trust in Allah; surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing. |
The killing of the innocent people is strictly forbidden. Muslims are encouraged to save lives and
are promised great rewards in the hereafter.
The recent events of belligerent acts of terror against civilians are in their very nature alien to Islam and
its code of ethical conduct. In going through the list of the code of ethics these belligerent acts of terror and the killing of civilians contradicts the very nature of each and
every injunction of this code and the Islamic belief system. These abhorrent acts of terror must be exposed and rejected outright for being virulent, vile, cruel, and inhumane and
cannot be condoned or tolerated and are in stark contrast to the injunctions of the code of ethics as highlighted below which clearly bring out the peaceful and civilized intent of
the Islamic value system:
·
Do not kill
·
Do not commit suicide
·
Conduct private and public affairs through consultations
·
Forgive and Reconcile
·
Refrain from the use of force except in self defense
·
Save lives
·
Lean towards peaceful resolution of conflicts when the adversary shows sign of peaceful intent.
·
Discuss and debate in civilized and goodly manner
In no way can the fair minded fail to see the outright rejection by the Islamic belief and value system of
the criminal acts of terror by those extremists who unjustly claim to belong to the Islamic Faith.
Thus, we must attest that whoever surrenders his or her whole being to God and follow His admonitions and
take hold of the most unfailing support of the Almighty, shall be profusely rewarded with goodness in this World and in the hereafter . This is God’s intent in His creation and in
the Grand design of the Universe.
